Portrait - Lt Col J.A. Clark, the Commanding Officer of the 72nd Bn,CEF, 1915.
Portrait of Lieutenant Colonel John Arthur (J.A.) Clark, the Commanding Officer of the 72nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, 1915.
Brigadier-General John A. Clark joined the 72nd Regiment, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada on organization in November 1910, as a captain and when the 72nd Battalion, C.E.F. was authorized in July 1915 for overseas service in World War One. Major Clark was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and assumed its command. Clark would command the 72nd Battalion until September 1918 when he was promoted to brigadier general and given command of 7th Canadian Infantry Brigade.
General Clark was one of the prime movers behind the construction of the Seaforth Armoury in 1936. Before that year the Seaforths utilized many different sites in Vancouver, including the Beatty Street Drill Hall, the old Vancouver Club, and the 'Hoffmeister Building' located in the 1100-block of West Pender (across the street from the former Elysium Hotel).
The attached colourized black and white photograph was done by Mark Truelove ('Canadian Colour) and located on the Seaforth Imgrum site.
