Prince of Wales lays a foundation stone for Prince of Wales School, 1919

H.R.H. The Prince of Wales prepares to lay a foundation stone for Prince of Wales School at King Edward Avenue and Alexandra Street, (Point Grey) Vancouver on 22 September 1919. Photograph shows Captain A.J.B. Mellish, SHC (centre in mufti with moustache) and others. Prince of Wales opened for classes in September 1920 at its original site, which is now Shaughnessy Elementary School at 4250 Marguerite St. Vancouver. In 1960 it moved to its current location at 2250 Eddington Drive, which had previously been a golf course and a marshland. On 22 September, 1919 HRH Edward, The Prince of Wales, 25, visited Vancouver, BC. There was a civic reception and a military ball in the Arena in the evening with tickets at $5. He visited other areas of Greater Vancouver and opened the New Westminster Exhibition. Prior to the ball he attended a dinner as a guest of the Vancouver Club. Members went to great lengths, e.g., painting the ladies’ lavatory, providing an electrical display of the Prince's motto Ich Dien, arranging for HRH's favorite flowers (sweet peas), and engaging the services of Mr. Copley's orchestra, tucked away in the dining room's bay window. (The Prince later went on to become King Edward VIII, but abdicated in 1936.) VANCOUVER ARCHIVES ITEM DETAILS PAGES ATTACHED
