Pioneers preparing grave crosses for casualties, Baranello, Italy, 19 Oct, 1943
October 1943.
Corporal W.F. Blackwood and Private R.J. Barnes, both of the Pioneer Platoon, The Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, preparing grave crosses for casualties, Baranello, Italy, 19 October 1943.
From the SH of C Facebook page: James Calhoun on September 18 at 5:02pm
"Many of you will have seen this official war photograph from Library & Archives Canada before. What many of you won't know is how much this photograph moved David Fairweather.
In his own words:
"This is a behind-the scenes picture of Corporal W.F. Blackwood and Private J. Barnes of our Pioneer Platoon preparing crosses for four of our comrades killed earlier in October, and buried temporarily close to where they fell. At that time their graves were marked with a crude cross and their helmets placed on the cross or on the ground atop the grave. Prior to internment their lower "dog tag" was removed and turned over to the Padre or Adjutant for official recording of the death and nothing of the map reference and grave.
This picture has special significance for me. One of the unmarked crosses against the wall is intended for the grave of my brother, Sergeant George Fairweather....[he] was killed on the night of October 6th, 1943 while attacking Hill 1007 near Baranello."
