72nd BATTALION CEF, SH of C
72e BATAILLON CEF, SH de C
72nd Bn winning the open Tug-of-War at Cdn Highland Sports Meet. July, 1918
72nd Battalion in the open Tug-of-War in the Canadian Corps championship sports held at Villiers-au-Bois on September 29, 1917. They were defeated by the 29th Battalion. Photo o.2010.
From the Regimental History, pages 74 - 75:
"On September 29th, when the Corps Championship Sports were held at Villers-au-Bois,
the 72nd Battalion tug of war team met that of the 29th [Vancouver] Battalion, which it had previously defeated for the Army Championship. The pull was a very long one, and at one
time the 29th team except one man had been pulled over the line. They were, however, in splendid physical shape, and managed to recover themselves and eventually win.
The 72nd team was well known throughout the Corps, and was universally considered unbeatable, consequently this defeat occasioned great surprise, and was generally attributed
to lack of training and over confidence."
