FOUNDATIONS OF THE 72nd REGT, 1910-1914
Fondations du 72e régiment, 1910-1914
Officer, 72nd Regiment, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, Vancouver, circa 1912
Postcard (Possibly a cigarette card) - Officer, 72nd Regiment, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, Vancouver, circa 1912. He is dressed in feather bonnet, scarlet tunic, kilt, plaid, sword, medals, diced hose with black leather shoes with buckles.
This Vancouver regiment was raised in 1910 as the 72nd Highlanders of Canada. Taking advantage of a vacant number (left empty by a disbanded Nova Scotia unit), the unit was raised as a Highland regiment. Two years after its formation, the 72nd was granted permission to copy the title and uniform of the British regiment that had long carried the same number - The Seaforth Highlanders.
This print shows an officer of the 72nd Regiment, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada wearing full dress: diced hose, kilt and plaid in Mackenzie tartan, red highland doublet with yellow
facings and feather bonnet. This sort of copying of British traditions by unrelated Canadian militia units was common in the late-19th century.
