Seaforth Baby Christenings, Late 1940s

Clipping - Seaforth Baby Christenings, Late 1940s " MASS CHRISTENING CEREMONY took place at Seaforth Armories Sunday. Honorary Captain Rev. J.D. Hobden, padre of the Seaforths, baptized the children of officers and other ranks. Participants from left to right are: Mrs. Albert Dixon and Jacqueline Carol; Mrs. Denis Meade and Michael Denis; Mrs. Wilfred Hicks and Terrance Wilfred Prideaux; Mrs. H. R. Hammond and Joanne, held by Padre Hobden; Mrs. T. O.'Neil and Gerald Thomas; Mrs. H. Robertson and Henry Michael; Mrs. Harry MacDonald and Barbara Dianne; Mrs. R. N. George and Robert William George; Mrs. B. St. John Rutherford and David Bruce; Mrs. J. Gibson and Patricia Ann Gibson." Reverend J.Dinnage Hobden, the founder of the Vancouver John Howard Society, became one of Borstal's staunchest advocates. The borstal system was a system of reforming criminal youth which was imported from the UK. In 1938, the Report of the Royal Commission on the Penal System of Canada arrived calling for, among its many recommendations, the formation of a national Borstal Program. This Royal Commission has been accredited with initiating a shift in Canadian correctional perceptions from a punitive to a rehabilitative treatment-based approach. The program's main appeal to reformers was that it proposed the segregation of young or first-time offenders from their more seasoned counterparts. Attached to Media
