French Lebel bayonet scabbard (WW I)

French Lebel rifle bayonet model 1886/93/16 scabbard, World War I. The scabbard is tubular in shape, with a round tip. FRENCH LEBEL BAYONET MODEL 1886/93/16 The French Lebel bayonet was introduced in 1916 and is very similar to the bayonet designed for use with the Model 1886 Lebel rifle but lacks the hooked quillon of the original pattern. The muzzle ring incorporates a locking device. The all metal grip is found in nickel and brass. the example shown here is brass. The overall length of the bayonet is 18.5". The length of the blade is approximatelly 13.5". The design of the blade in the Lebel bayonet has multiple edges. When thrusting the bayonet into an opponent this causes a wound that is jagged and much more difficult to cure. The scabbard has a square bracket attached near the throat area. This is where a leather strap would be passed to allow the bayonet to be secured to the belt of the soldier.
