Camp Nanaimo, an army training camp was in operation at the site of present-day Vancouver Island University (VIU) from 1940-1945. At the end of the war the Vocational Training School occupied the facilities. The Facilities built to serve Camp Nanaimo would later be used as classrooms, workshops, and student dorms. During WWII, the Dominion-Provincial Youth Training Centre operated as an army trade school. Students learned to repair army vehicles and the school worked in collaboration with Camp Nanaimo to address the training camp's needs.
