Biography of Captain Sir Alexander,George Anthony Allan Mackenzie 4th Baronet, CD. of Glen Muick [Scotland]
Biography of Captain Sir Alexander,George Anthony Allan Mackenzie 4th Baronet, CD. of Glen Muick [Scotland], a.k.a. AGAM, Tony, Stowe and Bart. This biography was taken from the Regimental Association newsletter.
Captain 'sir Alexander,George Anthony Allan Mackenzie 4th Bt. c.o. of Glen Muick a.k.a. AGM, Tony, Stowe and Bart.
Allan was born at St. James Palace, London on 4 January, 1913. His father was Captain Allan Keith Mackenzie who died of wounds received in action in 1916 and his rother was the Han. Alexandra Louvima Elizabeth Knollys, daughter of Viscount Knollys, who was personal secretary to King George V. Allan's father's older brother was Col. Sir Victor Audley Falconer Mackenzie, 3rd Baronet, D.S.O. of the Scots Guards. Allan's Godparents were King George V
and his mother Queen Alexandra (widow of King Edward Vll).
Allan attended Stowe College in London and spent his youth otherwise between London and the family estate at Glen MUich, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. From 1924 -31 he was Page of Honour to King George V and attended many court and state functions in that role.
After graduating from Stowe College he elected for an outdoor life and came to Canada in 1932 to join the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. (a very select force in those days). On his first posting to Edmonton and Jasper he met his Bride-to-be, Marjorie McGuire, daughter of A.F. McGuire of Jasper and Kamloops (and incidentally, a first cousin of George McGuire later a Seaforth officer in England and Italy).
After serving in many Detachments in the Western Arctic he and a fellow constable bought their way out of the Police and set up a Fur-Trading Post at Fort Norman on the Mackenzie River. That was 1937 and in the same year he married Marjorie McGuire. ·They were working hard at the post when the 2nd World War broke out.
After winding up his affairs Allan hastened to Calgary to join the closest Highland Regiment. He was soon Overseas and was commissioned there with the Calgary Highlanders.
In November, 1943 Allan joined the Seaforth Highlanders on the approach to Ortona, in an exchange of officers between the two regiments. We did well with the acquisition of Allan, Buck Buchanan, Jim Allen and Bob Cross.
Allan's story beyond this is known to most veterans where he served as a quiet, brave, Scout and Rifle company officer until the end of the campaign in Holland. During this, in early 1944, his Uncle Victor died and Allan succeeded him as 4th Baronet.
In 1945 Allan returned to Canada and was put on hold from active life as it was discovered he had had T.B. 'While abroad, but had cured itself. Further problems were occasioned by action by another uncle who contested the title and estate. Through the efforts of our Col. Merritt, VC, acting on Allan's behalf, the title was secure but Allan lost the bulk of the estate in Scotland.
,
Allan re-entered the Army in 1951 ·as an officer in the Highland Battalion in the 27th Brigade. N.A.T.O., later becoming the Black Watch (R.H.R.) of Canada. In 1961 he retired as Captain and moved to Cobble Hill on Vancouver Island. Here he joined the Corps of Commissionaires and served for many years retiring with the rank of Sergeant. He died on 5 January 1993.
NOTE: The Mackenzie Baronetcy, of Glen Muick (pronounced "Mick") in the County of Aberdeen, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on 21 March 1890 for James Mackenzie, a Deputy Lieutenant for Ross-shire and Middlesex.
The third Baronet was a Colonel in the Scots Guards and courtier.
The presumed fifth Baronet has not successfully proven his succession and is consequently not on the Official Roll of the Baronetage.
