Diced Hose of Pipe Major MacDonald who fell at the Battle of Culloden in April 1746

Pair of Diced Hose of Pipe Major MacDonald of Skye who fell at the Battle of Culloden on 16 April 1746. The Battle of Culloden was the final confrontation of the Jacobite rising of 1745 and part of a religious civil war in Britain. On 16 April 1746, the Jacobite forces of Charles Edward Stuart were decisively defeated by loyalist troops commanded by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. The MacDonalds fought on the left flank of Charles' Army. Caption in the Frame: "Pipe Major MacDonald of Skye, Scotland killed at the Battle of Culloden A.D. 1746. These tartan stocking worn by him at the battle were taken home to his family, and had been kept in the family until the late Reverend Roderick MacLean of Skye and later of Valleyfield, Prince Edward Island brought them to Canada. Presented to the Officers' Mess of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada by Captain Blair Otway Mayne, November 1940. The said Pipe Major MacDonald was the great great grandfather of General Sir Hector MacDonald." Major General Sir Hector Archibald MacDonald, KCB, DSO (4 March 1853 – 25 March 1903), also known as Fighting Mac, was a distinguished Victorian soldier who had served in Afghanistan, South Africa, India, Sudan, Egypt and Ceylon.
