TRENCH ART AND SOUVENIRS

ART ET SOUVENIRS DES TRENCHÉES

Trench Art Shell Cruxifix (WW I)

Trench Art Shell Cruxifix (WW I) The head and cross arms are copper bullet heads and the .British 303 shell casing is brass. On one side of the casing is a Queen Victoria Army General Service button - QVC crown and crest - "Dieu et Mon Droit / Honi Soit qui Mal Y Pense". On the primer side is a button with crossed cannons and a grenadier grenade. The button is possibly from the Transvaalse Staatsartillerie (Afrikaans for Transvaal State Artillery). The Staatsartillerie was the only professional division of Boer origin and wore uniforms. The full dress buttons were made of brass, depicting crossed guns surmounted by a grenade. This is possibly from the Service Corps Branch Transvaalse Staatsartillerie.
