231st Bn officers on Pier D on return from Sidney to Hastings Park, 1 Nov. 1916
Return of 231st Battalion, CEF from Sidney, BC. Photo # 4197.
The troops are on Pier D of the CPR Terminal to march back to their quarters at Hastings Park after four months of training at Sidney Camp. The distance is about 7 km. This company is led by an unknown major on horseback. They are most likely marching east on East Hastings Street.
The photo shows Captain Reginald Tupper and Lt Col Francis Leach in the centre. There are several other officers and senior NCOs on the dock.
From the 231st Battalion, CEF Souvenir Booklet:
On November 1st, the regiment embarked at 10 o'clock on the steamer "Princess Sophia" and arrived in Vancouver at 3 o'clock in the afternoon to again occupy their old quarters at Hastings Park.
