SEAFORTH CADET CORPS
Corps des cadets de Seaforth
72nd Seaforth Cadets, Hopkins Landing, Sunshine Coast, 3-5 August 1938
Photo album - 72nd Seaforth Cadets at their summer camp at Hopkins Landing, Sunshine Coast in August 1938, in Vancouver, May 1938 and in 1939.
The land (lot 911) was originally purchased by G.H. Hopkins in 1907. The camp was the site of the old YMCA and St. Margaret's Camp. The old YMCA camp moved east of Langdale in 1929. The property was leased to various other organizations such as the Cadets as a camp.
There is no cover to the album and there are some photos missing. The photos and postcards are of varying sizes. Photo corners have been added to the photographs as most of the images are held by scotch tape or nothing at all. The pages have been numbered. Some of the photos have handwritten descriptions on the rear and/or pieces of paper describing the picture. Restored in June/July 2017.
From Regimental History, page 524:
"During the years 1936 to 1940, Capt. (later Major) E. A. S. Chowne, M.M., commanded the Cadets. It was during this period that the Cadet Corps grew in numbers and through its ranks there passed many Cadets trained and equipped to play a prominent part in the strife ahead. In the summers of 1938 and 1939 the Regiment sponsored a camp for the Cadets at Hopkins Landing. During the 1939 camp the Cadets were honoured by a visit by the Duchess of
Sutherland, accompanied by many dignitaries."
Hopkins Landing is located north east of Gibsons, BC at the end of Hopkins Road off of Marine Drive. This area is one of the original clusters of summer cottages that were served by steamships. There is a pebbly/sandy beach with roped-off swimming area and floating dock.
