S.S. Princess Joan lapel pin

S.S. Princess Joan lapel pin. The centre has a red and white checkered flag inside a blue captain's wheel. Mrs. De Long organized and forwarded parcels to CEF troops who were serving overseas. The letters in this collection date from late 1918 and early 1919. They are thank you letters to her. It appears that all of the recipients lived or still had family in the North Burnaby area. The BC Ferry sister-ships, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Joan arrived at their home port of Victoria from Great Britain in 1930 for CPR coastal service. These 365 foot three-funnel vessels were driven by twin screws and quadruple-expansion engines giving them a service speed of 16 1/2 knots. First used in the famous CPR midnight sailings between Victoria and Vancouver, they also became known to thousands of tourists as the last of the CPR steamers to operate on the winter Seattle-Victoria run until the 1960s.
