Capt. Roaf on horseback at Camp Vernon, Summer 1939
Captain Roaf on horseback at Camp Vernon, Summer 1939.He is wearing a pith helmet, shirt and tie, riding breeches (not tartan), riding boots and spurs. In the background are bell tents and a small hill.
Regimental History, p. 48-49:
"During the summers of 1938 and 1939 the Seaforths were allowed to take more men to camp, and they were permitted to be in camp for an entire week. The camp at Sidney in 1938 was a modest one compared to the large concentration of all militia units at Vernon in the summer of 1939. Here for the first time since the war, the infantry, cavalry and other supporting units gathered together to engage in fairly extended field manoeuvres. In a sense it represented
the epitome of inter-war training at least in numbers and scope. The lines of tents drawn up along the slopes of Mission Hill, the sounds of the pipes, trumpets and bugles of the various bands, the swarms of khaki-clad militiamen on the streets of Vernon in the evening, and the marching columns of armed men out for route marches during the day, all gave an exceptionally martial air to the otherwise peaceful area."
Capt. William George Hamilton Roaf,OBE,ED,MiD served in the Seaforths from 2 September 1939 until he was transferred to the general staff. He ended the war as a brigadier.
Order of the British Empire Citation:
ROAF, William George Hamilton, Lieutenant-Colonel, ED - Officer, Order of the British Empire - Infantry - awarded as per Canada Gazette dated 12 August 1944 and CARO/4799 of that date, "for distinguished services in Italy".
This officer has rendered most valuable service on the staff for the past three years and in particular since 1 Canadian Corps and 1 Canadian Corps Troops have been in the Mediterranean theatre of operations. He served before the war in the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, Non-Permanent Active Militia. He proceeded overseas in December 1939 with his unit which formed part of 2 Canadian Infantry Brigade of 1 Canadian Infantry Division. Since that time he has served on the staff of 2 Canadian Infantry Brigade, Canadian Infantry Division, Headquarters Canadian Reinforcement Units, 2 Canadian Infantry Division and First Canadian
Army, in addition to the staff of Headquarters 1 Canadian Corps. His work has been utstanding in each appointment held. He has substituted most efficiently for the Deputy Assistant and Quartermaster-General, Headquarters 1 Canadian Corps on several occasions and in particular carried the responsibility for the administration of Headquarters 1 Canadian Corps and 1 Canadian Corps Troops for a prolonged period after arrival in the theatre, during the period of the illness of the Deputy Adjutant and Quartermaster-General. This was a particularly difficult time due to the paramount urgency in the re-equipping of Corps Headquarters and Corps Troops, His work in this connection deserves great commendation.
ROAF, William George Hamilton, Brigadier, OBE,
ROAF, William George Hamilton, Brigadier, OBE, ED - Mention in Despatches - awarded as per Canada Gazette dated 9 March 1946 and CARO/6431 dated 8 March 1946.
