Lt Marshall Beck, Esquimalt Military Hospital, 1917-1918
The Esquimalt Military Convalescent Hospital was opened to treat the wounded, shell shocked and tubercular servicemen and rehabilitate them for their return to civilian life from 1915 to 1919.
In 1915, empty hospital buildings were taken over by the Federal Government and turned into what was known as the "Disabled Soldiers Civil Re-Establishment Hospital" and later the Department of Soldiers' Civil Reestablishment. It existed from 1918-1927. From 1915-1918, the Military Hospitals Commission operated military hospitals in Canada. Staffed by Army nurses and doctors, the hospital was required to treat wounded servicemen and fit them for return to civilian life. Little is known of how well this task was carried out, except to say that many of the treatments were of a long-term nature.
Specially designed huts, known as T.B. (short for tuberculosis) huts, were used to give those suffering from respiratory ailments the very maximum of fresh air. The rehabilitation function of the hospital was not neglected and patients were employed gardening and were also engaged in the repair of automobiles.
On 18 April 1918 Beck was promoted captain and became second in command of the Hospital Section in Victoria. He became the Officer Commanding on 16 January 1919. He was in the "J" Unit, M.H.C.C. & Dist. Depot No. 11 from 26-2-17 to 31-3-20.
