Pipes and Drums at Cuxhaven, Germany 1945
Massed Pipes and Drums of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada and the 2nd, 5th, 6th and 7th Battalions of the (Imperial) Seaforth Highlanders on a sports field at Cuxhaven, Germany 1945. On rear [Cameron] Borden, J. Bloss, A.H. Whiteside
In mid-month the unit began to turn in its vehicles, but fortunately this did not take place until
after the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada joined with the 2nd, 5th, 6th and 7th Battalions of Seaforth Highlanders for one last, glorious get-together at Cuxhaven. A little over one hundred of the Canadian Seaforths were able to make the trip for the three days of sports and
festivities. The spectacle of the 100-strong massed Seaforths Pipes and Drums alone was worth the trip.
The massed pipe bands were under the leadership of Pipe Major B. Esson. "Later that evening," wrote the war diarist, "a surprise birthday party was given for our 'Pipes' at which no fewer than fourteen Cdn. Pipe Majors were present." (W.D., Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, 28 June 1945.)
Cuxhaven is in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated on the shore of the North Sea at the mouth of the Elbe River. It was frequently bombed in World War II and was captured by the Allies in May 1945. During the War, the Germans tested rockets there.
