SEAFORTHS RETURN TO CANADA, 1945

LE RETOUR DES SEAFORTHS AU CANADA, 1945

Account of the Seaforth Homecoming to Vancouver on 6 Oct 1945 by Bill Roberts.

An Account / Memoir of the Homecoming to Vancouver of the Seaforths on 6 October 1945. This recollection was for the 50th Anniversary of the return in 1995. This account is by Bill Roberts: "September 26, 1995 Bill Roberts 1205 Sinclair Street West Vancouver My story is a bit long but if I tell it you might be able to get something you can use. I left the Regiment in Amsterdam in June 1945 to return to Canada but received a head injury in an English amo dump explosion so didn't arrive until September, to be greeted by my wife and two year old daughter I hadn't seen. That was a Homecoming! Later in the month General Clarke told me he wanted me to meet the Battalion in Halifax to deliver some directives from him and memos from Ian McKenzie. I did so and renewed many old friendships there and on the way back to Vancouver. At the CPR Station we were met by other Seaforths who had returned before, including General Hoffmeister. Bob Peebles and I had both been NCOs in his company in 1940 and 41 and I heard that Bob walked up to him at the Station, brushed off his red tabs and said, "Hi Bert, you must cut yourself when shaving this morning . You've got blood all over your collar." I went to England on the advance Party in 1939 and at various times served in all companies so had many good friends . Incidentally I returned home in 1942 to attend COTC at Victoria and Calgary in case you wondered about the two year old daughter. [ed. note: Indeed I did, Bill.] It's hard to put my feelings into words but as we marched through those cheering crowds on Burrard Street and on the Parade Square I was both very proud and very sad when I thought of all the men we had left behind in Sicily Italy and Holland. I am enclosing my copy of "Back to Civil Life" in case you hadn't seen it Good Luck, Bill Roberts" ***** "September 26, 1995 Bill Roberts Booklet "Back To Civil Life" Contents: The purpose is to see that every discharged man and woman be given a chance to earn a living.
