SEAFORTHS RETURN TO CANADA, 1945
LE RETOUR DES SEAFORTHS AU CANADA, 1945
Account of the Seaforth Homecoming to Vancouver on 6 Oct 1945 by Cal Biggar
An Account / Memoir of the Homecoming to Vancouver of the Seaforths on 6 October 1945. This recollection was for the 50th Anniversary of the return in 1995.
This account is by Cal Biggar:
September 25, 1995
8137 Reviller Drive, Downey, California
Our return to Vancouver in 1945 naturally was long awaited by all of us. Our arrival at the CPR station was not cheered by onlookers but a strange silence prevailed as we formed up on the platform under the Granville Street Bridge. As we proceeded up Granville Street we were met with a warm welcome. Marching to Georgia Street and turning right got us to Burrard Street and the Burrard Bridge experiencing a warm welcome all the way. Having seen a picture of Ed Essons [the pipemajors] girlfriend previously I recognized her and had to call Eds attention to her as he was distracted at the time.
We proceeded to the Armoury playing Cabar Feidh our regimental theme tune to the parade square out back where we met many friends and relatives. Piper William Armstrongs father stood before William and broke down in tears.
I was met by Gladys Wickson owner of Victoria Tile and Brick Company. She was my cousin. We later visited Pipe Major Esson and his mother and that evening also I met a comrade Loyal Brown with whom I went through training in Canada before going overseas to be received by The Seaforths in England 1942. Loyal Brown was wounded in the foot.
I trust you can read this...
Best regards K54039 Piper Cal Biggar
