SEAFORTHS RETURN TO CANADA, 1945
LE RETOUR DES SEAFORTHS AU CANADA, 1945
Account of the Seaforth Homecoming to Vancouver on 6 Oct 1945 by Davie Fairweather
An Account / Memoir of the Homecoming to Vancouver of the Seaforths on 6 October 1945. This recollection was for the 50th Anniversary of the return in 1995.
This account is by Davie Fairweather:
September 26, 1995 Davie Fairweather
West Vancouver
When The Seaforths arrived home on October 7, 1945 I was at The Station to meet them as I had volunteered for the Pacific Force and had arrived back a month earlier. There must have been about 400 Veterans at the station who joined in the march to the Armoury.
These were vets who had served overseas with the Battalion and had been returned for repatriation due to wounds received. There were also a large number who had volunteered for the Pacific Force. Regardless of the makeup of the parade it was a memorable occasion and with a reported 100,000 people lining the route it was a stirring sight. Among those celebrating family reunions there was sadness evidenced by the quiet watchfulness of those whose men did not make it home.
