LES DÉSORDRES

Red officer's mess dress cumberbund (D'O.T. Rochfort)

Red officer's cumberbund (sash) for mess dress. The inside is made of white cloth. On the inside in ink: "D'O.T. Rochfort". Lt D'O.T. Rochfort was a Seaforth officer in the late 1930s. According to the regimental history,he did not serve with the regiment in WW II. A cummerbund is a broad waist sash, usually pleated, which is often worn with single-breasted dinner jackets or tuxedos. The cummerbund is an Asian-origin garment which was first adopted by British military officers in colonial India when they were exposed to Indian men wearing it. It was adopted as an alternative to a waistcoat, and later spread to civilian use.
