Foster - The Piano Dugout, Battalion HQ, 1917-1918

The Piano Dugout, Battalion HQ, 1917-1918 From the regimental history, pages 65- 67: "The longest tour in the history of the Battalion began July 25th when the 43rd [Battalion] was relieved on the Avion front immediately south of the Souchez River. [The Battalion] Headquarters were in Piano dugout and the tour lasted 39 days. It was called the Piano Dugout on account of a piano which the luxury-loving Hun had installed in it. It also contained a 40-toot revolving periscope which enabled the occupants to survey the surrounding country in security." September 14, 1917- Battalion relieved the 38th Battalion in the front line, with headquarters at "Piano" dugout. Page 86: "Again, on December 20th, the Battalion moved forward to trenches in the neighbourhood of La Coulotte, and once more its headquarters were in Piano Dugout.
