SICILY, JULY 1943 - SEPT 1943

SICILE, JUILLET 1943 - SEPTEMBRE 1943

Seaforth anti-tank gunners with 6 Pounder Gun in Sicily, Summer 1943

Negative - Seaforth anti-tank gunners loading and firing a 6 Pounder Gun in Sicily, Summer 1943. "Bell-Irving" on the rear. Identical to photo 1998.143.074 Four Seaforths serving a 6 Pounder anti-tank gun in action in Sicily. The gunners are shirtless. The gun is sited behind a stone wall and camoflauged with bushes. The Ordnance Quick-Firing 6-pounder 7 cwt, or just 6 pounder was a British 57 mm gun, serving as a primary anti-tank gun of the British Army during World War II, as well as the main armament for a number of armoured fighting vehicles. It was first used in North Africa in April 1942, and quickly replaced the 2 pounder in the anti-tank role, allowing the 25 pounder to revert to its intended artillery role.
