Colour photocopy of the Seaforth Guard at the Menin Gate, Ypres Belgium at/near 11 April 2017. A select number of Seaforths were in Europe to tour the WW I and WW II battlefields. The guard commander is WO Robert Deans and the right marker is Sgt Pat Farrell.
This photo was found in Lt Col Baylis' sporran with various badges.
The Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing is a war memorial in Ypres, Belgium, dedicated to the British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in the Ypres Salient of World War I and whose graves are unknown. The memorial is located at the eastern exit of the town and marks the starting point for one of the main roads out of the town that led Allied soldiers to the front line.
Following the Menin Gate Memorial opening in 1927, the citizens of Ypres wanted to express their gratitude towards those who had given their lives for Belgium's freedom. Hence every evening at 20:00, buglers from the Last Post Association close the road which passes under the memorial and sound the "Last Post". Often this bugler from the local fire department is supported by a military unit such as the Canadian Seaforths.
