75 Years Later: The Sounds of Freedom
75 Years Later: The Sounds of Freedom. Motion Picture - Documentary. 2020. Run time: 43:56. Directed by Scott Hinde.
This program was broadcast on Global Television in Canada and subsequently in the Netherlands. With the 75th Anniversary celebrations marking the Liberation of Holland in 2020 being cancelled because of the Covid - 19 pandemic, this program was put together to mark the anniversary.
Directed by Scott Hinde, the program features musical performances from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Seaforth Pipes and Drums and a local folk singer named Melanie Dekker, amongst others.
Interspersed between these performances are interviews with Honorary Colonel Rod Hoffmeister, along with former Dutch citizens and Canadian veterans to recall their wartime experiences.
These interviews and songs are held together by a framing device of a young girl finding a chest of her Grandfather's Second World War moments. All of the military artefacts: battledress tunic, helmet, medals, were provided by the Seaforth Highlanders Museum. The letters the young girl reads are from a fictional Seaforth, and were written by Mark Zuehlke.
Much of the production was filmed at the armoury.
