Thomas Percival Elder - Correspondence 1918
Letter of June 24th, 1918 from Thomas Percival Elder to his mother, Margaret Elder of Ottawa Ontario.
Transcription:
Stamford 24/6/18
Dear Mother,
It is some time since I wrote you last but I have been and still am expecting daily to hear whether they are going to grant me leave. It is now six weeks and time for things to have happened but this English army is so bound up with red tape that I am hardly surprised. The other day I had a little accident on a bicycle and bruised my side somewhat The doctor thought at first I had cracked a rib so sent me to the hospital. He has now decided that I have not, so will likely be out again to-morrow. I am enjoying myself immensely. The sister and nurses are extremely good to one here. It is a small hospital and I shall be sorry to leave. It is so undignified to be here as the result of a bicycle accident when most of the patients are the result of crashes from flying.
I am getting along very well
with my flying and shall soon be finished here. Then I go for a finishing course in bombing and then wait my turn for France. Another month's work will accomplish that. No matter where I am the application will follow me even if I do get across.
I had a letter from Jess the other day and as she did not know whether it would reach me or not therefore had not a great deal to say. Did I acknowledge yours? I think so but do not definitely remember.
It is time for lunch so must quit. Will cable when I know anything definite.
Your loving son
Percy
